Hartlepool boss Danny Wilson has completed the signing of Hull City defender Sam Collins for a nominal fee.
The 30-year-old centre-back moves to Victoria Park having made just 25 appearances for the Tigers in more than two years at the KC Stadium.
Manager Danny Wilson told BBC Tees of his new signing: "He'll come in with no fear whatsoever.
"The people who do come in will bring a spark for everyone else just like Richie Barker did for us last year."
Collins began his career at Huddersfield before experiencing spells at Bury and Port Vale, and spent a month on loan at Swindon earlier in the season.
Pools have also been linked with Stockport striker Anthony Elding but Wilson believes the club have lost out on that deal.
He said: "We'll have to wait and see but it seems as this moment we'll be disappointed.
"We've had a lot of deals that have been like that this year and we can't let that disappointment have an effect on us."
