Newell takes over at Pool
Mike Newell
Newell has not managed a club before
Third Division leaders Hartlepool have appointed Mike Newell as their new manager.

The former Aberdeen, Blackburn, Leicester and Everton striker takes over from Chris Turner, who left earlier this month to become the new Sheffield Wednesday boss.

Colin West had been in temporary charge at Victoria Park and he has now moved to Hillsborough as assistant manager.

Newell, 37, whose only previous managerial experience is as reserve-team boss at Tranmere, takes charge for the trip to Leyton Orient on Saturday as Hartlepool look to maintain their four-point lead at the top.

Hartlepool chairman Ken Hodcroft is confident he has appointed the right man.

He said: "Obviously with the team in the position it is we had a superb selection of candidates to choose from.

"Even deciding on the short-list was a really difficult task.

"Mike was the most impressive candidate overall and we believe he is the right man to take the club forward."
