Senegalese defender Lamine Diatta has joined Qatar's Al Ahli having failed to make a single appearance for Scottish Premier League club Hamilton Accies.

The former Senegal captain was unable to displace regular centre-halfs Mark McLaughlin or Chris Swailes.

The 33-year-old defender, who was previously with Lyon and Newcastle, is only eligible to play in the Emir Cup.

"We have signed Lamine Diatta after he impressed during a trial," said Al Ahli football director Ibrahim Al Karani.

Diatta, who has made 40 appearances for his country, began his career with Toulouse before moving to Olympique Marseille and Stade Rennais, where he made 129 appearances in five seasons.

He won a move to Lyon, where he played 30 times in two years before heading for St Etienne and then to Besiktas.

Diatta moved to Newcastle United in 2008 after buying out his contract with the Turkish club but played just twice for the English Premier League side.

The defender then signed for Hamilton but failed to force his way into Billy Reid's side.
