Halifax defender Peter Atherton has been forced to retire from full-time football because of a knee injury.
Atherton has been dogged by knee injuries
Atherton made his decision after undergoing surgery to repair tears in the cartilage in his left knee.
The 36-year-old began at Wigan, and had spells at Coventry, Sheffield Wednesday, Bradford and Birmingham.
He told Halifax's website: "I've loved every minute of my time here, after a couple of tricky years at Bradford it restored my faith in football."
