Much-travelled former Hull City striker Dean Windass has applied for the vacant manager's job at Grimsby Town.

The 40-year-old retired as a player on Monday after being sacked as player-coach at Darlington in September.

"The fact I've just retired was purely coincidental," said Windass, best known for firing Hull to the Premier League.

"But this is too good an opportunity for me to let it pass by. And I believe I've got the hunger and the attributes to make a success of it."

Grimsby, who currently lie 23rd in League Two, sacked previous manager Mike Newell on Sunday.

Windass was shown the door at Darlington last month, when manager Colin Todd was dismissed as Quakers boss.

"I was disappointed not to get the chance at Darlington when Colin Todd left," added Windass.

"I've always said I wanted to be a manager, to make my own decisions and be my own man.

"Grimsby would be a great club for me to start my managerial career."
