Skelton pain as Gretna take drop

Gretna coach Andy Smith
Smith led the team out against St Mirren

Gretna midfielder Gavin Skelton said the inevitability of his side's relegation did not make it any easier to accept after defeat by St Mirren.

"It's a sad day," he said after the 2-0 defeat. "After two promotions, you have to take the rough with the smooth, but it is not a good day.

"We knew it was coming but hoped to string it out for a couple more weeks.

"We don't know what the future holds, but I hope there is still a football club for the villagers to support."

Gretna made 22 players and six coaches redundant in midweek after falling into administration.

And coach Andy Smith took charge of the team for the first time while caretaker manager Mick Wadsworth was reportedly seeking fresh employment.

There is a sadness in the dressing-room, but I think the relegation issue was done and dusted when we got the 10 points deducted

Smith spared a thought for former benefactor Brooks Mileson, saying Gretna owed everything to the man who financed their rise through the Scottish leagues.

Mileson's backing has been withdrawn after he was hospitalised with a brain infection last month.

"At the moment, my thoughts are with Brooks Mileson," said Smith.

"After all, without him this club would never have got this far.

"Yes, there is a sadness in the dressing-room, but I think the relegation issue was done and dusted when we got the 10 points deducted.

"We are just gutted at losing the game. We played some good stuff recently and, if we had a natural goalscorer, we would have picked up some points in the past two or three games.

"We are not looking any further than the end of the season because we don't know what's going to happen. I really can't say because I honestly don't know."

Smith had urged the Gretna players to impress the watching scouts at Love Street and was impressed by their response.

"If someone comes in for any of the players then I have to be honest and tell them to seriously consider it as they have families to feed and bills to pay," he added.
