Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler has said his players are not fit enough following their second consecutive league defeat.
Hessenthaler's side lost 1-0 to Shrewsbury on Saturday after conceding a late penalty.
The Gills boss told BBC Radio Kent: "The boys train hard, but maybe they're not training hard enough.
"I'm not happy and the players know that. We've got to do better and make sure we bounce back next week."
Gillingham exceeded their manager's expectations during the opening month of the season with three league wins and a draw.
And Hessenthaler added: "It's still early days, we've dropped down to sixth - three points off the top so it's not the end of the world.
"But I think it frustrates us even more - what could have been if we'd done better in the last two games.
"We've started the month off poorly. We got our target last month, this month we've started poorly, now we're chasing it a little bit.
"We've got another four games this month, and we need to go unbeaten for the next four games to get our target."
