Smith planning to move to America

Midfielder Smith spent almost eight years with Gillingham

Former Gillingham captain Paul Smith is planning to move from Kent to America in search of his next management role.

Smith's first managerial job was with Ryman League side Margate, but he was sacked along with first-team coach Barry Ashby after just one season.

"I've had a couple of opportunities coaching at colleges and universities, mostly women's teams out there," he told BBC Radio Kent.

"I've spoken to a few people and now it's just picking the right one."

He added: "If we don't, I'll stay and then hopefully get myself back into football in this country."

Smith, 37, joined Gillingham in 1997 and made 338 appearances before he left the club in 2005.
