Gillingham chairman Paul Scally will back caretaker boss Ronnie Jepson's plan to off-load several players when the January transfer window opens.
The Gills are 21st in League One, just six points from the bottom.
"I will support Ronnie in what he wants to do, as quite clearly we need major surgery," Scally told BBC Radio Kent.
"We're in a transitional period, but we've certainly got enough players to stay in this division this season, then we'll rebuild for next season."
Meanwhile, Jepson has enlisted Mick Docherty, who was with him on the coaching staff at Burnley, to assist him on a temporary basis.
