Gateshead goalkeeper Tim Deasy has an unusual FA Cup hat-trick in his sights this season.

As a Barrow player, Deasy was part of a squad that reached the third round stage twice in a row, taking on top-flight clubs in the shape of Middlesbrough in 2009, then Sunderland in 2010.

Now as a Gateshead player, the Salford-born keeper is hoping to add Newcastle United to that remarkable run of North East clubs.

"I've had a good couple of years, first round three years ago, third round two years ago and then third round again last year," Deasy told BBC Sport.

"Every player holds the FA Cup in high-esteem, everybody loves it and you've got the chance of playing the best players in the world.

"[It was] Sunderland last year, Middlesbrough the year before, this year it's going to be Newcastle."

Deasy's role last season was a pivotal one, as although fellow keeper Stuart Tomlinson guided Barrow through tricky ties against Chester, Eastleigh and Oxford, it was he who donned the gloves for the trip to the Stadium of Light to face Premier League side Sunderland.

The Bluebirds were one of 2010's fairytale FA Cup stories, taking more than 7,000 supporters to Wearside, where Deasy shone in the limelight.

Up against England striker Darren Bent, the keeper was a stubborn barrier; denying last season's 25-goal striker a further notch to his tally and drawing praise from Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, despite losing 3-0.

"It's great to hear people like Steve Bruce, absolute heroes and legends in the game, commenting and saying you've done well," Deasy added.

"You just want more, you want to keep playing against the top players and testing yourself against top players.

"I got a lot of luck on the day, Darren Bent was striking them from six yards out, hitting me on the head and the ball was going over."

Standing in Gateshead's way of a place in the second round are Notts County, who reached the fifth round as a League Two club last term, away at Meadow Lane.

With a new manager in place in the shape of Paul Ince, and similar ambitions of a cup run in place, the League One side present a decent challenge for the Tynesiders.

We're going to give it a good go, we're not going there to defend, we'll go to attack, to beat them, keep a clean sheet and I reckon we'll beat them.

"We're going to try to make life as difficult as possible for them," Deasy said.

"Everyone knows, you get a new manager and it gives the players a lift, and we know they're going to be raring to go.

"I'm 100% sure they'll put a full strength team out, and if they don't I can see it being a bad decision because we're ready for them.

"No surrender, I can't see anyone going there with heads down or nervous, we're playing good football at the moment."

Unsurprisingly the cup occupies a big place in Deasy's heart, and the hunger remains strong throughout the squad.

"I can't describe the first time I played in the FA Cup, it was the third qualifying round, and I got a tingle down my spine, I get it every time I play in the FA Cup," Deasy continued.

"A lot of the lads have been quite far in the FA Cup, they know how much it means to us, to the fans, and to the club moneywise.

"We're going to give it a good go, we're not going there to defend, we'll go to attack, to beat them, keep a clean sheet and I reckon we'll beat them."
