Gateshead buy site for new ground

Blue Square Premier side Gateshead have purchased the land intended for the building of their new stadium.

The new ground, which will be covered on all four sides and house 9,000 fans, will be built on the former site of North Durham Cricket and Rugby Club.

"The construction of a new stadium in a central location is pivotal," said Gateshead chairman Graham Wood.

"The new stadium will be a great addition to the town and give the club a real identity amongst the community,"

Wood added: "These are exciting times for Gateshead Football Club. Having our own stadium will enable us to increase our income streams."

The Tynesiders hope to move to the new Prince Consort Road stadium, which will meet the minimum standard required to host Football League matches, in time for start of the 2011-12 season.

The stadium proposals also tie in with the club's plans to turn professional from next season, a move bankrolled by Wood.

Gateshead currently play their games at the town's International Stadium, predominantly an athletics venue that they rent from the town's council.
