Oldham defender Sean Gregan joins Fleetwood on loan

Fleetwood have signed former Preston North End favourite Sean Gregan on a three-month loan from Oldham.

The 36-year-old, who spent six years at Deepdale, initially joined Oldham on loan in 2006 before completing a permanent move the following year.

Despite playing every minute of every game last season, injury forced him to miss the start of this term.

Despite being club captain at Boundary Park, he was told by new Latics boss Paul Dickov that he could leave.

"I'm delighted to just get regular football after few chances at Oldham," Gregan told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"I may look to make a permanent move away from Oldham in the new year."

Fleetwood boss Micky Mellon certainly believes the much-travelled Guisborough-born defender still has plenty to offer.

We ask the players to manage themselves on the football pitch because they're in the thick of the action and Sean Gregan certainly falls into that category

"I've known Sean for some time now and this is something we've been trying to sort out for a while," said Mellon. "It's so good to bring in somebody with his experience.

"He has fantastic experience and he's still a very, very good footballer. We've only two centre-halves at the moment so everything's just fallen into place.

"We ask the players to manage themselves on the football pitch because they're in the thick of the action and Sean certainly falls into that category."

Gregan started his career with Darlington and went onto make 160 appearances for the club before joining North End under David Moyes for £350,000.

During his time at Deepdale, he lifted the Division Two title before a £2m switch to West Brom in August 2002.

He joined Leeds United in September 2004 and was in the side that lost to Watford in the 2006 Championship play-off final.

Gregan will be available to make his Fleetwood debut in Saturday's FA Cup fourth qualifying round clash with Buxton.
