Falkirk have signed former Celtic youth striker Kjartan Finnbogason on loan from Norwegian club Sandefjord.

The 23-year-old will be at the Scottish Premier League club until at least January as Falkirk have an option to buy the player on a permanent transfer.

And the Bairns hope to receive international clearance to field Finnbogason against Dundee United.

The Icelandic striker was signed by Martin O'Neill for Celtic from hometown club KR Reykjavik but left last year.

He scored nine goals in 22 appearances in the Norwegian Premier League but was reportedly keen to move again and this summer had trial spells with Bristol City and IFK Gothenburg.

Kjartan showed a real desire to want to come to Falkirk despite strong interest from Norway and from England

Falkirk head of football development Ross Wilson

Falkirk head of football development Ross Wilson said Finnbogason, who had hit the net 28 times in 20 appearances for Celtic's reserves, had impressed manager Eddie May in training.

"I have remained in regular contact with him whilst we have been discussing the possibilities of this transfer," said Wilson.

"I think Kjartan was becoming frustrated that it could not happen quickly and showed a real desire to want to come to Falkirk despite strong interest from Norway and from England.

"We have been talking with the sporting director of Sandefjord for some time as this transfer was rather complicated due to the different seasonal league structures in Norway and Scotland, which has a subsequent affect on the transfer window situation in both countries.

"We wanted to sign Kjartan for a longer period than this original agreement, but at this stage that is not possible due to Norwegian transfer regulations."

Falkirk signed fellow striker Danijel Marceta this summer on a similar, option-to-buy agreement from Partizan Belgrade.
