Defender McLean signs for Falkirk

Falkirk have signed Brian McLean on a two-year contract after the defender left Motherwell and given a trial to Linfield goalkeeper Alan Mannus.

The 24-year-old McLean was out-of-contract with the Bairns' Scottish Premier League rivals.

And he failed to agree a new deal before manager Mark McGhee left for Aberdeen last month.

The versatile former Rangers defender played just 27 games during his three-year contract because of injury.

Central defender McLean twice ruptured cruciate ligaments while at Fir Park.

Falkirk manager Eddie May told his club website: "Brian is someone I have admired for some time and all of the staff are delighted to have acquired a player of his calibre.

Although Brian can play in more than one position, I see him as a central defender

"He was troubled by an injury at Motherwell but is now over that and we are getting a player who, at 24, is just about in his prime.

"Although Brian can play in more than one position, I see him as a central defender and he will enhance the team, there is no doubt about that."

McLean and Mannus were at Stirling University on Wednesday as Falkirk began pre-season training under their new management team.

May was promoted from youth coach to manager this summer, while former defender Steven Pressley is his assistant.

Veteran coach Alex Smith became director of football to assist May after he took over from John Hughes, who moved to take control of Hibernian.

Hughes has already signed Patrick Cregg after the midfielder's contract ran out with Falkirk.

It is thought that the former Falkirk manager is also interested in Bairns goalkeeper Dani Mallo.

So Mannus could be an option after the Belfast-based keeper allowed his contract with Irish Premiership club Linfield to lapse.

The 27-year-old Northern Ireland international rejected the offer of a new deal after nine years with Linfield.
