Jeffers out with ankle damage

Jeffers' fine start to the season has been cruelly halted
Everton striker Francis Jeffers will be out of action for up to six weeks after a scan revealed ankle ligament damage, according to the club's web site.

The England Under-21 international was stretchered from the pitch during Everton's 1-1 draw at second division Bristol Rovers, which saw them knocked out of the League Cup.

The 19-year-old had made an excellent start to the season and scored six goals in nine appearances, equalling his total from the last campaign.

He had put Everton ahead early in the game at Rovers before suffering his injury.

Everton are now short of attacking options, with Duncan Ferguson still injured and Kevin Campbell short of match fitness after a long lay-off following a knee operation.

Manager Walter Smith is also looking at trying to sign United States international centre-half Gregg Berhalter from Dutch side Cambuur Leeuwarden.

The defender recently rejected a move to Norwich because he had ambitions to play in the Premiership.
