Smith salutes Jeffers
Francis Jeffers
Jeffers wheels away in delight after netting the winner
Walter Smith has paid tribute to his teenage sharp-shooter Francis Jeffers after the 19-year-old's double strike at the Riverside Stadium.

His two goals ensured that the Merseysiders, who put out a patched-up side, took all three points from their visit to Middlesbrough after going a goal down through a Steve Watson own-goal in the first half.

Smith believes that Jeffers' brilliant start to the season, with six goals in five games for club and country, is down to his renewed enthusiasm.

"Francis is really showing his appetite for the game now, perhaps he wasn't in previous seasons.

"I think the biggest thing is that he completed the pre-season. He has missed it for the last couple of years with an achilles problem and that showed in his play.

"He's really sharp and we're very pleased with him."
