Everton's young midfielder Ross Barkley has been sidelined by a broken leg.

The 16-year-old suffered a double fracture during England Under-19s' 2-1 defeat by Belgium in Wednesday's European Championship qualifier.

Barkley was involved in a collision with team-mate Andre Wisdom in the first half that led to both players being substituted.

The Liverpool-born player has been on the Everton bench this season but is yet to make his first-team debut.

Barkley was a member of the England team that won the European Under-17 Championship in May.

The full extent of his injury is now being assessed by Everton's medical staff.
