South Africa international midfielder Steven Pienaar has been named as Everton's player of the year.

The 28-year-old has played a hugely influential role in the Toffees' campaign, scoring seven goals in 37 appearances in all competitions.

Pienaar, who joined the Toffees from Borussia Dortmund three years ago, has seen him linked with other clubs.

But Everton are now in discussions with the midfielder over a new contract to keep him at the club.

Left-back Leighton Baines was voted as the players' player of the year.

The former Wigan defender has been rewarded for his consistency throughout a campaign in which he has missed just four games.

Baines, 25, won his first England cap against Egypt in March and is hopeful of winning a place in Fabio Capello's World Cup squad.

Both players were presented with their awards at a gala dinner at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral on Tuesday.

Jack Rodwell, 19, was also among the winners, being named young player of the year.

Pienaar missed last weekend's goalless draw at Stoke with an ankle injury but is hopeful of being fit for their final Premier League game against Portsmouth at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Everton, who have lost just twice in 24 games, are guaranteed to finish eighth in the table.
