Everton should be positive after win, says Tim Howard

Everton keeper Tim Howard says his side should be in a positive mood, despite conceding a late away goal in their 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.

Miguel Veloso's second-half penalty took some of the gloss off the first leg win at Goodison Park.

"I still think we're confident going into the second leg," Howard, 30, told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"We have to be confident it's another victory. If we play like that we should see ourselves through."

He added: "I think it's going to be a little bit trickier as they have the away goal, so we have to manage it better when we go over there.

"Even though the goal knocked us a bit we should be able to pick ourselves up and go again. So we're hoping we have a good trip in Lisbon."

Everton's Spanish playmaker Mikel Arteta started his first Europa League game of the season as he regains full fitness following a year out with a knee injury.

Despite playing well for large parts of the game, the 27-year-old concedes the tie should have been all but resolved after the first leg.

"We had enough chances today to score a couple more," said Arteta. "We need to play better than we did in the first 20 minutes and the last part of the game as well.

"I think we have a job to do there [in Lisbon] but we were comfortable and we think we can do it.

"We had the game under control at 2-0 and it was a bad pass [to Sylvain Distin] and he had to react. Then with a man sent off and a penalty - it couldn't have been any worse at the end.

"So we know we can't make any mistakes like that."
