Everton hold new stadium talks after Kirkby rejection

Everton have opened fresh talks with Liverpool City Council to reconsider possible locations for a new stadium.

A joint statement stated that the negotiations were "positive" and that more discussions have been planned.

The council previously opposed the club's application - rejected by the government in November - to build a stadium as part of a complex in Kirkby.

Everton have left open the option of sharing a ground although Liverpool have so far ruled out any arrangement.

Last year communities secretary John Denham turned down plans to relocate out of Liverpool to Kirkby because of possible effects on the "vitality and viability" of local communities.

The scheme included a 50,000-seater stadium alongside a large Tesco superstore and other shops.

A previous plan to relocate to a 55,000-seater waterfront stadium at King's Dock, Liverpool, was abandoned in 2003.

Everton want to increase capacity and corporate facilities at their home games and are unable to do so at current ground Goodison Park.

They claim that the 40,100 capacity of Goodison Park creates "a huge financial disadvantage to overcome".

City rivals Liverpool had plans for a 60,000-seater ground on Stanley Park approved in May 2008, although construction has yet to start.

But despite Everton claiming they would consider sharing, Liverpool have insisted they intend to retain sole use of the stadium.
