Miracle worker Moyes
David Moyes has become a hero to Everton's fans
Everton's David Unsworth has revealed how manager David Moyes' fierce ambition and attention to detail has transformed the club. Wayne Rooney's spectacular entry on to the Premiership stage has disguised the real star of rejuvenated Everton's show.
While the 17-year-old prodigy is being hailed as the finest footballing product of his generation, manager Moyes has been working brilliantly in the wings. The former Preston boss has guided Everton to their best Premiership start after masterminding a route to survival last season.
Some of the Moyes effect may have been missed by a wider audience - but in and around Everton the Scot is already a revered figure as he prepares to take his side to Newcastle for a Worthington Cup tie.
It has earned him cult status among Everton's followers with local paper the Liverpool Echo claiming the "manager is forging a reputation on one half of Merseyside which is bordering on almost religious fanaticism."
Everton's players are responding to Moyes' inspiration, a fact confirmed by David Unsworth in an exclusive interview with BBC Sport Online. He said: "David Moyes has come in and turned the club around. He's brought in players like Richard Wright and Joseph Yobo to add quality and works us very hard in training. "We train as we play. We pass the ball and the atmosphere is fantastic."
Moyes has also brought his well-known attention to detail to Everton, a ploy Unsworth admits has given a new dimension to the club. "Everything is geared, from Monday morning on, towards the next match. "Everything is structured in morning and afternoon sessions in such a way to work out how we are going to go about beating the opposition. "I can't say I've ever done anything before in such detail and it's rubbing off on everyone." Moyes has also produced a fitter team after Everton's squad were taken to France in pre-season for individual testing. Unsworth added: "We had a lot of tests and different fitness work and that has been a big benefit. "The manager is also a tremendously ambitious person. It has rubbed off on us and we have got both confidence and belief - two big words in football. "We believe that we can get big results against the big teams. We believe we can go to places like Elland Road and win, which is a big factor.
"I felt before the start of the season we could do something, and what I said then still counts now. "I think credit for that should go to everyone, the players, manager and his staff." New boys Wright and Yobo have settled to their task, and Unsworth said: "Joseph has been excellent and everyone has been delighted with Richard. "It was a big move for him when he left Arsenal, but he's proving a lot of people wrong." As for Moyes, he is proving a lot of people right.
