Paz on his way to Goodison
Walter Smith
Everton's boss looking for strength at the back
Argentinian defender Pablo Paz will arrive at Everton next week for a week's trial, with a view to a loan deal until the end of the season.

The tough international, who is currently in dispute with his Spanish club Tenerife, comes highly recommended.

He was originally offered to Everton when they were in the depths of their injury crisis last month.

Everton boss Walter Smith said: "When we were struggling for players a few weeks back and down to 11 fit men, there were quite a number of players offered to us, like him.

He can come over for a few days training with us, so we'll take the opportunity to have a look at him

"We shall just take a look a him in training and see how things develop.

We were looking for players to come in on loan, and he was one. But we couldn't reach an agreement at the time to do anything.

"The injury situation has now improved dramatically. However we've now been told he can come over for a few days training with us, so we'll take the opportunity to have a look at him."

Paz has had one trial with Newcastle, and it is believed that boss Bobby Robson was considering a 1.2m offer before the deal collapsed.
