Ebbsfleet defender Ross Smith looking for American move

Ebbsfleet United

Ebbsfleet United defender Ross Smith is planning to leave Stonebridge Road just weeks after re-signing for them.

The Fleet helped the 29-year-old make a return to the game after he had surgery for a heart condition.

Before his diagnosis the Canadian was due to play with Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids, and he now plans to try his luck in the US again.

"Pre-season starts in January and it's tough leaving but my life is back there," Smith told BBC Radio Kent.

He added: "I always remember the good times and I want my life here too. I want both worlds and I can't have it.

"It will be tough leaving, I've obviously got to know the guys and enjoyed playing with them so much and I've always enjoyed playing under Liam Daish as well."

Smith joined Ebbsfleet from Margate in the summer of 2005 and spent two seasons with the Blue Square Premier club, before leaving for Dagenham & Redbridge.

He returned for his second spell in November after doctors gave him the all-clear to resume playing again.

Although Smith is planning a move over to America, he has not ruled out a third spell at Stonebridge Road if his move to the US does not work out.

"If the gaffer and the club would have me then I would always love to come back," he said.

"When I left before I always said I'd love to come back and as long as the gaffer's the manager then I'd enjoy coming back here."
