Dundee Utd manager Peter Houston expects better defence

Houston's side conceded four goals against Rangers at Ibrox

Dundee United manager Peter Houston felt his players gave away sloppy goals in their 4-0 defeat away to Rangers and expects better in future.

"I felt the second half performance was very much self-inflicted," Houston told BBC Scotland.

"Even at the second goal, you can bring it back if you get a goal back. In the last 25 minutes, we were disappointing.

"It's something we'll need to look at. We have players that could have punished them, but it didn't happen."

Kenny Miller's double helped Rangers move three points clear at the top of the Scottish Premier League after Sean Dillon's own goal gave the Glasgow side a ninth-minute lead in the match at Ibrox.

I felt we were dominating the play in possession, but you can't gift goals to teams like Rangers because they punish you even further, and it came back to haunt us

A glancing header by Steven Naismith put the defending champions further ahead then Miller slotted home his second to complete the rout.

However, Houston felt his side were still in the game, even when they went two goals down, and should have been more wary of Rangers' ability to make teams suffer.

"The second goal killed us," said Houston. "I thought we were still in the game with 20 minutes to go at 1-0, but we gave possession away and Rangers counter-attacked from the halfway line and scored a second goal.

"From then on in, it was disappointing.

"Even at the second goal, you can bring it back if you get a goal back, but I felt in the last 25 minutes we were very disappointing.

"You've got to have an end result and an end product, but our final ball was sometimes not great.

"I felt we were dominating the play in possession, but you can't gift goals to teams like Rangers because they punish you even further and it came back to haunt us."

Houston added: "It kills you. It knocks the stuffing and confidence out of you and Rangers got a huge lift out of it."
