Dundee Utd manager Peter Houston bemoans lack of effort

Houston felt United performed poorly in the first half at Celtic Park

Dundee United manager Peter Houston felt his side's first-half performance let them down in their 1-0 defeat by Celtic in the Scottish Premier League.

"It was a frustrating afternoon for us. We showed them too much respect in the first half and never created anything," Houston told BBC Scotland.

"I told them I would rather get beat 7-1 than what we had put up.

"We could have caught Celtic with a lack of confidence, but we didn't do enough, and it disappoints me."

Robbie Keane struck a fine solo effort in the 20th minute for his first goal at home, pushing Celtic to within seven points of Rangers at the top of the SPL table.

Jon Daly could have snatched an equaliser for United late in the match, but United failed to pick up any points and hang on to fourth place, ahead of Motherwell.

"We had a bit of a go in the second half with some chances here and there," said Houston.

"Celtic are always going to create chances, and our keeper Dusan Pernis was up to anything, but there was nothing major for him.

"Jon Daly had a cracking effort and Jennison Myrie-Williams could maybe have snatched a draw. I'm frustrated because in our first-half performance we lacked a bit of belief.

"Towards the end, there was a bit of time-wasting, and it's not often you come to Celtic Park and they do that.

"It was frustrating that our final ball and final cross just didn't get in there."
