Dundee United have signed Latvian defender Pavels Mihadjuks until the end of the season.

The 29-year-old is familiar with Scottish football, having spent time with Inverness Caley Thistle last year.

"Pavels is a quality defender with real presence," United manager Peter Houston told the club website.

"When it became apparent over the weekend that injuries were going to leave us short defensively, I moved quickly to secure his services."

Mihadjuks, who arrives as a free agent from FK Ventspils in his homeland, joined Inverness in January 2009 but could not prevent the Highlanders from dropping out of the Scottish Premier League.

"I've been aware of this player and his availability for some time, particularly after he impressed in his short time with Inverness," added Houston.

"This will not only provide us with immediate and quality cover, but will also allow us, and Pavels, time to see whether this short-term deal should be extended beyond then.

"Assuming all the necessary clearances come through on time, Pavels will go straight into the squad for Wednesday night's game against Hamilton."

United will be without Paul Dixon for at least two weeks after the left-back suffered a recurrence of knee ligament damage in the Scottish Cup win at St Johnstone.

Fellow full-back Michael Kovacevic is already sidelined because of a broken nose.
