Daly extends his Tannadice stay

Daly has been in fine form for United this season

Dundee United striker Jon Daly has signed a new three-year contract extension to remain at Tannadice.

The 25-year-old is enjoying his best spell at United with eight goals so far this season following an injury-hit start to his time at the club.

"I'm delighted to have my immediate future secured and that it is with Dundee United." Daly told the club's website.

"I enjoy working here and have made many good friends."

Daly missed the majority of the last campaign after suffering a cruciate knee injury in May 2007.

The Irishman arrived from Hartlepool nearly two years ago and has gone on to establish himself in Craig Levein's side.

And the player was grateful that the club stood by him during his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"The manager and coaching staff - and supporters - have been terrific to me, showing both patience and understanding while I recovered from injury," he added.

"The manager in particular also kept faith in me and I'm happy to remain with a club that has helped me through a difficult time and a club which, I feel, has an exciting future."

Daly's goals have helped United to third-place in the Scottish Premier League this season and pole-position for a European slot.

Levein was equally happy to have secured Daly on a long-term deal.

"Jon is the type of player all clubs need," he said.

"He's been very unfortunate with injuries in his time here, but these problems are now behind him and he's benefited from a run of games in the first team.

"I like his approach to the job and his contribution to the team and I'm sure he'll also add to his goals tally during the rest of the season.

"Jon is an important player for Dundee United, with his best yet to come and I'm therefore delighted to tie him up for a further three years."

With Daly now signed up until 2012, Levein is hopeful of retaining the services of defenders Sean Dillon and Lee Wilkie.

Both are out-of-contract at the end of the season and talks are ongoing with the pair.
