Chisholm relief after United win

Dundee United caretaker manager Gordon Chisholm excused his players a poor performance at Inverness, insisting that the result was all that mattered.

"It was not enjoyable but today was not about playing well, it was about making sure Dundee United are still in the SPL next season," said Chisholm.

"It was a tense and scrappy game, but the players dug in and battled.

"We have under-achieved this season because, with the players we have, we should not be in this position."

Chisholm insists he has not held talks with chairman Eddie Thompson about his future and now has the Scottish Cup final to look forward to.

He added: "I've not spoken to the chairman about the job and I'll wait and see what he says to me first.

"It's the board who make these sort of decisions and I'll leave them to get on with it.

But Thompson was full of praise for Chisholm, who took over after the sacking of Ian McCall in March.

Thompson said: "My first emotion is relief because, if I'm honest, I'll admit that I've not enjoyed much of the last six months.

"In fact, the only bit of it I've enjoyed was the last five minutes because, by that time, I knew we were safe.

"Gordon has done a very good job and has showed that he has the ability to be a manager at this level.

"We have a drawer full of applications, but I've not looked at them for weeks because Gordon has been in pole position.

"No decision has been made yet, but, starting from tomorrow, I will consult my directors and decide the best way forward for Dundee United.

"I've not been able to think about the cup final because I was so worried about the prospect of relegation, but I'm going to enjoy it now."
