MS forces Artero retiral
Javier Artero and his wife contemplate his retiral
Javier Artero will no longer take to Dens Park
Dundee's Spanish midfielder Javier Artero has been forced to retire from playing football through illness.

He formally announced that he was quitting the game at a media conference at Dens Park on Thursday.

The 27-year-old was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which affects the nervous system, last September after falling ill before the first game of the season against Dundee United.

But he will continue working with the club in a new role of international scout and there will also be a benefit game arranged later in the season.

I'm very sad about having to quit
Javier Artero
Artero said: "I'm very sad about having to quit, but I will try to remain upbeat.

"I had some problems last year and things changed for me with my illness.

"I've been working hard to get back, but every game that I couldn't reach the level I needed to be at was another step towards this decision."

He added: "I'm fine in terms of my personal life, but not able to continue playing football."

Artero, who joined the Dark Blues before the end of the 1999-2000 season from San Lorenzo, has trained with the club in recent days.

But the former Real Madrid man has struggled to maintain the fitness levels he has become accustomed to.

Artero did return to the first team set-up under Ivano Bonetti in November against Hearts but has rarely featured since.
