Gribben joins Bo'ness from Sons

Striker Darren Gribben has joined junior outfit Bo'ness United after being released two months into his contract with Dumbarton.

The 23-year-old had signed for the Sons after leaving Berwick but now teams up with former Wee Rangers manager Alan McGonigal at Bo'ness.

McGonigal told the Scottish Football League website: "Darren does not drive.

"So the travelling to Dumbarton was making it difficult for him to settle at the club."

Dumbarton's website had only gone as far as to say that they had released Gribben from his one-year contract "for personal reasons".

Gribben, who scored 15 goals for Berwick last season, had not featured in any of the Second Division club's three matches this season.

The Sons were knocked out of the Alba Challenge Cup by Morton, lost in the Co-operative Insurance Cup by Dunfermline Athletic and suffered a defeat at home to Alloa Athletic in their opening league match on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Gribben appears likely to be joined at Newtown Park by Paul Shields, with Bo'ness poised to sign one-time Celtic striker.

Shields, who signed for Celtic for £100,000 from Raith Rovers in 2000, is returning to Scotland after a spell in Swedish football with Östersunds.

The 27-year-old was also on the books of Clyde, Forfar Athletic, Gillingham and Livingston and had loan spells with Albion Rovers, Clydebank, Queen of the South and Ayr United.
