Dean Saunders replaces Sean O'Driscoll at Doncaster

Doncaster Rovers have named Wrexham boss Dean Saunders as their new manager on a three-year contract after sacking Sean O'Driscoll.

O'Driscoll, 54, was the longest-serving manager in the Championship with five years in charge of Rovers.

Saunders, 47, has overseen Wrexham's survival in the face of financial difficulties and they lie second in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

His first game in charge will be against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Saunders took over at Wrexham in October 2008, his first managerial post, and guided them to 64 wins in 155 games.

Rovers have not won any of their last 19 league games, a run stretching back to 1 March and one costing O'Driscoll and assistant manager Richard O'Kelly their jobs.

And Saunders told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I got a phone call last night and was asked if I'd be interested. I came over and in half an hour, deal done.

"I'd like to thank the chairman at Wrexham and the owners at Wrexham for not standing in the way, and I'd like to thank Doncaster for putting their faith in me, trying to lift their club off the bottom of the league and try to get it going forward, which I will guarantee I will give 100% to.

"We will have to fight our way out of the situation we're in, knock the stuffing out of teams. The football comes after that."

And Doncaster chairman John Ryan said: "We really couldn't let it get much worse.

"We tried to back Sean as best as we could, but in the end we felt a change was possibly the right thing to do.

"The whole club needed a lift and I think Dean is the perfect man to do that."

Wrexham have named 35-year-old striker Andy Morrell as caretaker manager, starting with Saturday's game with Grimsby.

Morrell will be assisted by coaches Brian Carey and Michael Oakes.
