Derby striker Steven Davies suffers injury setback

Injury restricted Davies to seven league appearances last season

Derby County striker Steven Davies is expected to be out of action until early next year after damaging knee ligaments during pre-season training.

The 22-year-old has already had an operation and head physiotherapist Neil Sullivan is confident the forward will regain full fitness this season.

Manager Nigel Clough said: "We are devastated for Steven.

"It is a real blow and a kick in the teeth for him, and my heart goes out to him. He is heartbroken."

Davies has been plagued by injury since joining in the summer of 2008 and has only started a total of 20 matches for the Rams.

Clough said the the injury was particularly cruel as Davies was looking sharp and ready for the new campaign.

"He has shown a terrific attitude and willingness to get himself right for the new season," Davies said.

"He was looking in terrific shape and we were delighted with how he was coming on.

"I have no doubt that if he applies himself to his rehabilitation like he has done over the last few months to get fit then he can bounce back from this and still play a big part in our season.

"Steven was a key element of our plans for the forthcoming season."
