Derby given Barnes fitness boost

Giles Barnes in action for Derby County
Barnes' hit one Premier League goal last season for the Rams

Derby County midfielder Giles Barnes is ahead of schedule to return to action following a series of operations on a long-term knee injury.

Manager Paul Jewell told BBC Radio Derby: "He does need another operation, but Dr (Richard) Steadman is absolutely delighted with his progress.

"There's no time frame on it, but it's really good news for Giles, and really good news for us."

The 19-year-old has not played for the Rams since March.

Dr Steadman has helped a host of top stars recover from knee injuries, including Michael Owen, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Alan Shearer.
