Burley relishes Derby challenge
George Burley
Burley faces a tough task at cash-strapped County
Derby have officially confirmed the appointment of George Burley as manager on a two-year contract.

Burley, 47, had arrived at Pride Park in March as an interim replacement for the suspended John Gregory with a specific brief to save the First Division club from relegation.

The former Ipswich chief fulfilled his criteria, winning three and losing four, to steer the Rams clear of danger.

Burley made it clear he would be interested in making a permanent return, and after Derby confirmed the sacking of Gregory, the Scot was always firm favourite to take over.

"I said from day one I would be very interested in a permanent appointment at Derby and thankfully it has come about and I'm really looking forward to it," Burley told the club's official website.

"I know it's going to be a challenge but I was really impressed by the way I was looked after when I arrived, the way the players responded and the passion of the fans in particular.

"Derby is very much a footballing city. The fans and the people love their football. Even during a difficult season we had 25,000 fans sticking behind the team.

"Derby is a tremendous club and I'll be doing my utmost to get it going again."
