West heads for Derby
Taribo West
Derby hope West has desired effect
Derby County have recruited Nigerian international defender Taribo West on an initial three month loan deal in what manager Jim Smith hopes will be another major step in steering Derby away from relegation.

The Pride Park side are currently propping up the Premiership with defensive frailities proving to be their downfall as they have conceded 28 goals in 11 top-flight outings this season.

Smith secured the signing of French defender Lilian Martin from Olympique Marseille and has now brought in West from AC Milan.

I believe these new arrivals will put a smile on the faces of our fans but, more importantly, help us build on our Worthington Cup win and turn around our Premiership season.
  Derby manager Jim Smith

West has turned out regularly for his country and the former Auxerre and Inter Milan defender watched Derby take a break from their Premiership troubles when they beat Norwich in the Worthington Cup.

Martin will be available for Derby's next game against West Ham although whether West will receive clearance in time remains uncertain.

"With Lilian Martin's international clearance coming through and the prospect of Taribo West turning out in a Derby County shirt, we can finally say that our hard work behind the scenes has paid off," said Smith.

"Both are excellent players and, in Taribo, we have one of the most recognisable figures in world football."

Smith added: "I believe these new arrivals will put a smile on the faces of our fans but, more importantly, help us build on our Worthington Cup win and turn around our Premiership season."
