Simon Davey has resigned as Darlington manager less than three months after he joined the club.

The former Barnsley boss, who replaced Steve Staunton in April, informed the Quakers of his decision by e-mail.

Swansea-born Davey, 39, has been linked with the vacant manager's post at Hereford United.

But Darlington chairman Raj Singh told the club's website: "I can confirm that we've had no contact whatsoever from Hereford, or any other club."

Singh added: "It's very disappointing to say the least. We gave Simon everything that he'd asked for, as we did with the previous two managers.

"We were as shell-shocked as anyone to receive this news and it does come as a big blow to us.

"We tried contacting Simon on several occasions.

"Unfortunately we've now had official confirmation from him in writing that he wishes to leave.

"It's very frustrating that we've not been able to speak directly to Simon about this so that he could explain to us exactly why he's made this decision.

"He has very briefly cited personal reasons and insists that it's nothing personal or detrimental about me or the club."

Davey, who had a short spell on loan with the Quakers during his 10-year playing career, took over at Darlington on 1 April, when his side were 16 points adrift of safety at the bottom of League Two.

He was in charge for the last 10 games of the season, enjoying three wins and two draws before the Quakers' relegation from League Two.
