Dorchester Town's Devlin in Dagenham & Redbridge trial

Dagenham & Redbridge

Dagenham & Redbridge have taken Dorchester Town's Steve Devlin on a pre-season trial.

The midfielder impressed Daggers boss John Still after he netted the equaliser in their 1-1 friendly draw.

Dorchester boss Ashley Vickers told the Dorset Echo: "He goes with our best wishes and I hope he gives a good account of himself."

Last year, Devlin was playing for Holt United in the Dorset Premier League, eight divisions below League One.

Former Dagenham player Vickers added that he would not stop Devlin from leaving the Blue Square Bet South club if he was offered a permanent deal at Victoria Road.

"They haven't made an offer for him yet and they won't do unless they want to pursue it after the trial period is up," he said.

"Obviously if they do then we would get a fee for him. If he does go then it has to be right for us as a club and for Devs.

I'd love him to stay from a selfish point of view but you can't stop players progressing.

"First and foremost he's a Dorchester player and if he does come back I'm sure he'll be better for the experience.

"Credit to him for the way he's progressed and climbed the ladder so rapidly. Devs is an honest and extremely loyal lad and has all the qualities that I, and other managers such as John Still, like.

"He jumped five leagues going from Holt to us and went on to be named supporters' player of the year last season. I'd love him to stay from a selfish point of view but you can't stop players progressing."
