Dougie Freedman appointed as Crystal Palace manager

Relegation-threatened Crystal Palace have appointed caretaker manager Dougie Freedman as the club's new boss.

Ex-Palace striker Freedman has been on the Selhurst Park coaching staff since March 2010, first helping Paul Hart and then the recently sacked George Burley.

"This is very proud moment for me," said Freedman, who has signed a two-and-a-half year contract.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, 33, had been favourite to succeed Burley, but opted to stay with the League One club.

In two spells as a player at Selhurst Park, Freedman scored 108 goals in 368 appearances.

"I'll now look at both the playing squad and my own staff which we hopefully add to sooner rather than later," Palace's new manager told the club's website.

"I'd like to thank the owners of the club for giving me this opportunity."

Burley was sacked after Palace's 3-0 away defeat at Millwall on New Year's Day with Freedman then taking charge as caretaker boss.

Scot Burley was appointed manager of the Eagles in June 2010 after the south Londoners were bought by the CPFC 2010 consortium.
