Palace get Popovic green light
Tony Popovic
Popovic: Could make his debut at the weekend
First Division Crystal Palace have been granted a work permit for Australian international Toni Popovic.

The central defender had his original application turned down because Australia were ranked too low in the world standings.

But Palace have successfully appealed the verdict after the Socceroos rose in the rankings.

Popovic could now make his Eagles debut against Stockport this weekend.

He has been very impressive in pre-season with us and he's very experienced

Palace assistant
Palace assistant coach Steve Kember said: "The appeal was successful and we've got the work permit, but we've still got to work a few things out.

"He has been very impressive in pre-season with us and he's very experienced. He has 40-odd international caps."

Popovic has spent the last five years with J-League club Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

He rose to prominence playing against France and Brazil in the Confederations Cup this summer.

Palace are still waiting to hear from 33-year-old Middlesbrough defender Steve Vickers over his possible transfer.

Manager Steve Bruce discussed personal terms with the player last weekend after agreeing a fee with the Premiership club, but has yet to hear from him.

He said: "We are not the biggest team and we need some more height. Hopefully we can get Steve in."
