Crewe Alexandra defender Martin in make or break season

Carl Martin
Martin is looking to establish himself in the first team

Injury prone defender Carl Martin hopes he can repay the faith the managerial team at Crewe have shown in him.

The 24-year-old has spent a nightmare two years in South Cheshire due to injuries and physical problems.

Since signing from non-league Wealdstone in 2009, Martin has made just one first-team appearance.

"It's a massive season for me. A lot of players have gone to join other teams and it offers a huge opportunity to play," he told BBC Radio Stoke.

"We've lost three or four defenders this season.

"I can play anywhere across the back four so that helps and it gives me a bit more motivation to try and get in that starting 11.

"Last season was very stop-start and very frustrating but I've got to keep my head down and work hard, and hopefully stay injury free.

"I want to hit the ground running when the season starts.

"At the end I've got to repay Dario [Gradi], Bakes [Neil Baker] and Steve's [Davis] faith and the physios at the club.

"They've been patient with me and I can't wait to get started."

Crewe have welcomed defenders Josh Gowling and Curtis Haynes-Brown and goalkeeper Alan Martin for pre-season training.

All three are expected to feature in the club's opening friendly games away at Congleton Town and Rhyl on Monday, 11 July.
