Ex-Crewe defender Westwood returns to train with club

Defender Ashley Westwood is training with former club Crewe Alexandra in an effort to earn a contract.

The 34-year-old left non-league Kettering Town on 1 February and joined up with the Alex squad on Monday.

However, manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke: "I'm looking for someone who's going to come in and improve us.

"I've said he can come and train but it's unlikely I can find a place for him. He's got to be better than one of my two centre-halves, simple as that."

David Artell and Patrick Ada have been the regular partnership at the heart of the Crewe defence this season, with Adam Dugdale and Mat Mitchel-King also able to play at centre-back.

After joining the club from Manchester United in July 1995, Westwood scored 11 goals in 125 appearances for Crewe before leaving for Bradford three years later.

He has gone on to represent Sheffield Wednesday, Northampton, Chester, Swindon, Port Vale, Stevenage, Wrexham and Kettering.
