Crewe Alexandra manager Dario Gradi has said he will use three different captains in League Two this season.

David Artell, Lee Bell and Ashley Westwood will all wear the armband at various stages, with Artell leading the side out against Hereford on Saturday.

"Circumstances have presented us with the people we've got," Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke. "Artell and Bell never shut up, they're natural leaders.

"I'd like to develop a captain as well and Westwood leads by example."

He continued: "I've always said that I want 10 captains on the pitch and the idea is to have as many as you can."

Defender Artell and midfielder Bell are new arrivals at the Alexandra Stadium from Morecambe and Macclesfield Town respectively, while Westwood won the player of the year award last season.

Westwood, 20, told BBC Radio Stoke that he is surprised that the honour of captaining his home-town club has come so early in his career.

"Dave has come in and Belly is a great lad," said the midfielder. "They've both got loads of experience and hopefully I can add that to my performances on the pitch."

Artell, Bell, left-back Danny Blanchett and goalkeeper Rhys Taylor are all likely to make their debuts for the Alex on Saturday.
