Potential Crewe signing Jimmy McCarthy is a player with extraordinary talent, according to coach Neil Baker.

McCarthy has played for several non-league clubs in the Staffordshire area and is spending the summer training with the League Two side.

Baker told BBC Radio Stoke: "Jimmy is a player, I would say, that has more ability than anyone I have ever seen."

Baker has also unearthed Luke Varney, Tom Pope and John Brayford from non-league football in his time at Crewe.

McCarthy has played for Leek Town, Alsager Town, Kidsgrove Athletic, and was last season playing for Warrington Town in the Unibond Division One North.

He is also the captain of the Blue Mugge, a Sunday League team in Leek.

In the last 12 months, the Alex have signed Carl Martin [Wealdstone], Jordan Connerton [Lancaster] and Antoni Sarcevic [Woodley Sports] from non-league football.

Baker and manager Dario Gradi travelled to Ireland on Wednesday to watch England's C team of non-league players as they try build a squad for next season.
