Westwood signed a new two-year contract this summer
Crewe midfielder Ashley Westwood is delighted to be fulfilling his boyhood dream of playing for his hometown club.
The 19-year-old said he always knew he would end up at Crewe and did not take much notice of lessons at school.
"There was only ever one thing for me and that was to be a footballer," he told BBC Radio Stoke.
"It's what I've dreamed of since school. The teachers used to go 'you need the grades' and all I wanted was to play for Crewe."
Westwood was handed his full league debut by former boss Gudjon Thordarson.
A product of Crewe's academy set-up he has been a regular in the team since Dario Gradi resumed control of first-team affairs at the beginning of October.
The Alex manager has been happy with his progress and said: "I am not worried about Westy, he will make a mistake now and again but we will have to live with that.
"Everyone at this level makes mistakes, how they respond is the deciding factor, he will learn and go again, he will only get better."
You can hear commentary of Notts County v Crewe Alexandra on BBC Radio Stoke DAB on Saturday from 1500 BST.
