Crewe manager angry at relegation

Gudjon Thordarson
Gudjon Thordarson could not save Crewe from relegation to League Two

Gudjon Thordarson thinks Crewe squandered any chance of staying up, after a 3-0 defeat to Leicester confirmed their drop to League Two.

"I'm very disappointed," he told BBC Radio Stoke. "We had a good February and March. I think we threw it away.

"Lots of teams in League Two will be looking to beat Crewe next season. A lot of people think it's easy to bounce back, but it's hard work.

"I'm already starting to plan for next season. The preparation starts now."

The Alex will be playing in the bottom division of the Football League for the first time since 1994.

Thordarson has hinted at changes to his backroom staff during the close season, and has warned his players that bouncing back to League One at the first attempt will not be easy.

"I will do my tests on my players on Monday and Tuesday and I will tell them what I expect of them for next season," said Thordarson.

"They know that come the end of June, they will know what is required of them, and that's lots of hard work."

After a fine initial response to Thordarson's appointment, Crewe failed to win any of their final 10 matches in League One, and eventually finished the season four points adrift of safety.
