Thordarson 'is staying at Crewe'

Crewe Alexandra boss Gudjon Thordarson has told BBC Radio Stoke he expects to be in charge of the club next season.

The Alex are on the verge of relegation to League Two, but prior to Thordarson's arrival in December their situation had appeared irretrievable.

"There's lots to improve," said Thordarson, who took Crewe as high as 17th, before a nine-game winless run.

"I know what I want to do. I hope I get the support to do it. No one said it would be easy, but we'll keep going."

Crewe were seven points adrift at the bottom of League One when the Icelander took over.

The revival that led them to 17th won Thordarson the League One manager of the month award in February.

But the Alex have not won any of their last nine games, and now need to beat champions Leicester on the final day of the season to stand any chance of survival.

Thordarson is concentrating on building a squad for next season, although there are worries that his player of the season, defender John Brayford, could be set to move away from Gresty Road.

The summer signing from Burton Albion has been linked with a move to Championship side Derby, who are managed by his former boss Nigel Clough.

Brayford told BBC Radio Stoke: "It's only speculation, but it's nice to be linked with higher teams.

"I presume people put two and two together because he used to be my old manager, but I just want to concentrate on doing my job for Crewe.

"Everyone wants to play at the highest level, whether it is with Crewe or somewhere else."
