New Hearts boss Graham Rix was to be offered the vacant manager's job at Crawley Town this week, BBC Southern Counties Radio has revealed.
Rix was one of a series of candidates interviewed by the Reds last week.
However, he has accepted an offer to succeed George Burley at the Scottish Premier League leaders instead.
Crawley are now revisiting their notes on last week's other candidates - and are unlikely to appoint a new boss before Saturday's game with Southport.
Rix had previously managed Portsmouth and Oxford, after a spell on the coaching staff at Chelsea.
