Keith Wright (right) celebrates promotion last season
Former Hibernian striker Keith Wright is the new Cowdenbeath boss after Gary Kirk was sacked.

Blue Brazil chairman Gordon McDougall wielded the axe shortly before Tuesday's 0-0 draw away to Forfar Athletic.

Cowdenbeath lie second botton of Scotland's Division Two and the final straw came with Saturday's 2-1 home defeat by the same opposition.

Kirk had criticised his team's attitude and demanded better after that game.

Instead, it was his successor who benifitted by an improved performance.

Wright has been put in charge until the end of the season.

The 36-year-old striker scored 60 goals in his six years at Easter Road following a 420,000 move from Dundee.

He went on to play for Raith Rovers, who were also his first club, Morton and Stenhousemuir before joining Cowdenbeath in June 2000.

Wright's eight goals last season helped Kirk lead Cowdenbeath to promotion as runners-up in Division Three in his first full season as manager.

Kirk had himself taken over in controversial circumstances.

Peter Cormack was sacked after only 10 days as the successor to new Hearts head coach Craig Levein.

There were claims at the time that a group of players had put pressure on McDougall to dismiss the former Liverpool and Scotland forward and install Levein's former assistant, Kirk.
