Colchester United have signed Ipswich's New Zealand international defender Tommy Smith on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old has featured 26 times for the Tractor Boys this season, but has not played since Paul Jewell arrived as manager in January.

U's manager John Ward told BBC Essex: "I'm really pleased to bring him in and bolster up that back line.

"We know he's got pedigree and he will help me with the back four situation."

After Colchester's trip to Tranmere on Saturday, Smith is due to join up with his international team-mates for a tour of the Far East.

Ward said: "He's due to go and play next week in China and Japan, so we're still waiting to see if that's going to happen with the problems in Japan.

"But we'll get him for Saturday and the final seven or eight games of the season."

Ipswich will have a 24 hour recall on the player after he has been at the Community Stadium for a month.

Town boss Jewell told BBC Radio Suffolk: "He's frustrated as he's not getting games.

"I've seen him play in training and for the reserves but I'd like to see him play in a competitive football match."
