Injury halts Colchester's Steven Gillespie's loan move

Colchester United boss John Ward has revealed striker Steven Gillespie had been primed for a loan move, but has suffered another injury setback.

The 25-year-old has made just one substitute appearance this season after struggling with an ankle injury.

But he is set to miss another week of action after tweaking a thigh muscle.

Ward told BBC Essex: "We made him available to go out on loan for a month. Then he limped off the training pitch and we weren't able to do it."

Gillespie was signed from Cheltenham for £400,000 in 2008 after he notched 33 goals for the Robins in two-and-a-half seasons.

The U's have failed to find the net in their last three games and it was hoped the former Liverpool trainee would come back from a loan move ready to contribute towards the Colchester attack.

"We both agreed it would be a good chance to get him out and play for a month, with a definite view to him coming back here," said Ward.

The U's boss is unlikely to add to his squad and would prefer to turn to Liam Henderson, who is on loan from Watford, or former Barnsley striker Kayode Odejayi.

"I've got young Liam who's champing at the bit to play and Kayode who's been coming on off the bench," he added.

"Those two guys need to get a chance."
